Reading Pens

Reading pens are battery-powered scanning devices that let you drag the tip across printed text and instantly hear the pronunciation, see the definition, and (on better models) save the word to a vocabulary list. For adult ESL learners they remove the single biggest source of friction in extensive reading: the constant context-switch between book and dictionary app.

The right pen depends mostly on two things — how accurate it is on the kind of text you actually read, and which language pairs it supports. Premium models also add full-sentence translation, Anki/Quizlet sync, and offline operation for travel. Budget pens (under £40) are generally better suited to children’s picture books than to adult novels.

Below are our hands-on reviews of the current top reading-pen models. For a deeper explanation of every feature that matters and which type of pen suits which kind of learner, see our complete Reading Pen Buyer’s Guide.
