Flashcards & Learning Toys

Spaced-repetition flashcards are the single most efficient way to grow English vocabulary fast — when you use the right deck. The category splits into two camps: digital flashcard apps (Anki, Quizlet, Memrise) where you can download or build decks of any size, and physical flashcard sets (boxed cards from Cambridge, Collins, Pearson) which are particularly useful for parents teaching children without a screen.

For exam candidates (IELTS Band 7, TOEFL 100+, Cambridge B2/C1) we generally recommend Anki with a curated, high-frequency deck rather than a generic “10,000 words” mega-deck. For self-study adults building daily-use vocabulary, premium pre-built decks (FluentForever, Refold, official IELTS publisher decks) save weeks of curation. For children, physical cards with images and parent-guided review beat any app.

Our reviews below test each option on the metrics that matter to learners: real retention rate after 30 days, how easy the deck is to maintain, and whether it covers the vocabulary you actually need at your level.
