English Apps

English-learning apps fall into four very different categories and confusing them is the most common reason learners waste months on the “wrong” tool.

Structured course apps (Duolingo, Babbel, Busuu) take a beginner from zero to roughly A2 with gamified daily lessons. They’re best in the first 6–12 months of learning, then their pedagogy hits a ceiling. Pronunciation & speaking apps (ELSA Speak, Speechling, Boldvoice) target accent and intonation specifically — if speaking is your main weakness, one of these is more useful than another grammar course. Tutoring & conversation platforms (italki, Cambly, Preply, Lingoda) connect you to live human teachers; for B1+ learners these usually beat any app for actual progress. Test-prep apps (Magoosh IELTS/TOEFL, E2 Test Prep) are purpose-built for one exam and almost always worth their subscription if you’re sitting in the next 6 months.

Our reviews below test each app on a 30-day real-use basis and tell you exactly which type of learner each suits. We also flag the apps that are mostly hype.
